There are those writers who seem to be able to do everything all at once. They have multiple novels on the go at the same time and publish a million and one books a year. Well ok that’s an exaggeration. However at times that’s how it feels.
I’m a slow writer or at least I think I am. I pick away at my stories until I know what the story is. The expansion of the story as it unfurls and takes shape is one of the things about the writing process I love. In particular the later half of the rough drafting process. Somewhere between the 20k to 30k word mark I have a better idea of my character and what the story actually is.
This is why I set a goal of 25k words for the month of November. Hopefully I’ll know more about what this story is and I can ease into it from there out. Or at least that is the plan. To be honest I don’t think I’ll hit the 25k for Project Dragon (PD) this month. PD is sitting just over 12k words as I write this and while that puts me behind for the month I have uncovered two of my major groups in this world. This is a circumstance I’m really happy with. Particularly since one leads to or causes the inciting incident. The second has the comfortable world that he thought existed crash down around him and, much to his horror, ends up right in the heart of enemy territory. (Kinda).
Project Warlord
So what about Project Warlord you ask? The draft is complete and I’ve put it aside for a bit just to let it sit. Don’t ask me why other than I find it useful. It helps me see what’s there when I pick it up again and dive into self edits to move it from draft to 1st draft status. Which will be soon.
